History

The APRV Network is built on the idea of providing the science behind the methodology of a unique method of applying the mode Airway Pressure Release Ventilation (APRV) to produce a mechanical breath profile (MBP) that provides alveolar stability.  This Time Controlled Adaptive Ventilation (TCAV) Method has been utilized by Nader M. Habashi, MD, FACP, FCCP of the R Adams Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland.  Over 20 years of bedside experience with the TCAV method led Dr. Habashi to a better understanding of the interaction between the patient and the mechanical ventilator and personalizing the mechanical breath.  It became apparent that a “one-size-fits-all” approach to mechanical ventilation was not appropriate to a patient population where disease pathology varies.  By understanding the viscoelastic nature of the respiratory system, a clinician can personalize the MBP for patients based on the feedback loop of the expiratory slope.  This TCAV method may finally be the answer clinicians and researchers have been looking for to personalize mechanical ventilation for each patient.
